Cave Art
In the 1940s, children playing in Southwest France stumbled upon the Lascaux Grotto, a series of narrow cave chambers featuring enormous prehistoric paintings of animals. Some of these creatures measure up to 16 feet (almost 5 meters) in length. The animals, including bulls, wild horses, reindeer, bison, and mammoths, are depicted in various poses—some in solemn parades while others swirl around in different orientations. The artwork is outlined with charcoal and primarily painted in shades of red, yellow, and brown. Scientific analysis shows that these colors were made from ocher and other iron oxides ground into fine powder. The techniques for applying color varied; some were brushed or smeared onto the rock, while others may have been blown or sprayed on. Evidence suggests that tubes made from animal bones could have been used for spraying, as hollow bones stained with pigment have been discovered nearby.
